Valley and Castle

From our base at Casa Blanca Rural we head out to the Penyes Albes and leave the vehicle sized tracks behind in favour of a small footpath that follows the stream that feeds the Font de Ferri. We cross the stream and rockpools at several places using conveniently placed stepping stones.

The footpath climbs steeply in places through the pine trees and olive groves and depending on previous rainfall and the time of year there are a couple of pretty waterfalls en route. There is no hurry with our walks and we're happy to take as many breaks as required on this climb.

Just past an old ruin we reach a signpost giving a choice of routes. On this walk we head for the castle. The path is single file and leads along the side of the mountains providing views right across the valley. The castle ruins appear and the small ruined casita before it. A nice spot to take a beather before climbing along the stony path to the castle itself.

The castle has some fascinating history which will share with you en route and is a perfect spot for a picnic lunch.

Break over, we come back down to the casita then branch off towards the village of Ayelo de Rugat below us. The path is rocky and sometimes resembles the course of a stream following rain, but it steadily winds down to a small reservoir and civilisation beyond.

There is a choice of routes to return from here to Montichelvo.
