Mountain RefugeAs with our 'village circuit' we head out of Montichelvo on its south side and descend into the campo, crossing the barranca but, instead of turning west to Ayelo, we head on up the Penyes Albes mountains. Leaving the tarmac and concrete caminos we take a long and zig-zagging stony track that climbs steadily for about an hour. The views becoming more spectaular at every turn! The gradient levels out a bit and we continue east admiring the views way across the Vall d'Albaida, the distant villages looking like small scale architects models. At about an hour and a half into the walk we arrive at a walkers refuge which is an ideal spot to stop for refreshments. From here we can either return along the same route or continue along the track until we descend into the neighbouring village of Terrateig, another ancient Moorish settlement. The return to Montichelvo is by caminos through the lower countryside at the edge of the valley |
